WKNO’s Interview Series “Newsmakers” Features
Memphis City Mayor A C Wharton
WKNO-TV will premiere the second in a new interview series Newsmakers, featuring with a conversation with Memphis City Mayor A C Wharton. Eric Barnes, publisher of the Memphis Daily News and host of WKNO’s weekly series Behind the Headlines, will host the half-hour show Newsmakers: Mayor A C Wharton on Wednesday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. on WKNO/Channel 10. It will repeat at 11:00 p.m. on WKNO2, available over the air on Channel 10.2 and on Comcast Digital Cable Channel 910.
In this interview, Mayor A C Wharton talks about his childhood in Lebanon, Tennessee, and how the values that he learned there shaped his later life. He also discusses his time as head of the Shelby County Public Defender’s office and later as County Mayor.
The half-hour program paints a portrait of a man who didn’t allow the racism of the 60’s and 70’s to dampen his dreams. It also lists his groundbreaking achievements: for example, becoming the first African American Professor of Law at the University of Mississippi, a position he held for 25 years.
