For Immediate Release
April is National Volunteer Month, and WKNO is celebrating by saluting its Action Auction volunteers. Radio deejay Brad Carson, who has been volunteering as an auctioneer for the past four years, is one of WKNO’s most valued volunteers.
Originally from Mount Olive, Illinois, Brad now resides in Arlington, TN with his wife of four years and his two-year-old son. “I volunteer with WKNO because of the wonderful local programming they supply,” he said. “Programming that wouldn't be available anywhere if they weren’t carrying it, like Sports Files with Geoff Calkins. But it goes further than that. I think about the basic programs like Sesame Street that my son, Jake, enjoys. Over the past few years I’ve also enjoyed Memphis Tiger broadcasts they made available to the city and HD-quality concerts.”
Brad has been a deejay for Classic Hits 94.1 KQK for seven years, on the air Monday through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. until noon. He can also be heard regularly on 92.9 FM ESPN with Gary Parrish. He has been a radio deejay since he was 18 years old, beginning at WSMI AM/FM in Litchfield, IL, where he did farm/market reports, play-by-play sports and news in addition to washing the floors.
In addition to donating his time and talents to WKNO, he says he tries to focus on two other main groups here in the Mid-South: St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and Special Kids and Families. “My favorite events include the St. Jude Red Carpet Bash I hosted this past January at the Hollywood Casino-Tunica,” he said, “and two big fundraisers for Special Kids and Families: the SKAF Bunny Run and Fun Walk in April and their early Fall Plane Pull event in Millington. But I love working with WKNO because the volunteers have a great spirit and energy.”
With the support of KQK and ESPN, he also partners with Big Brothers and Big Sisters (“I’m very excited about the upcoming 2011 Sports Ball”), the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the Red Cross during several recent disasters.
“My family is the most important thing in my life,” said Brad. “I enjoy spending time with my beautiful wife. My son Jake is turning three in April, so that's certainly fun! I'm also blessed to be one of those rare people who does what he loves as a hobby. I love sports and music, so my job is a hobby of sorts. Between radio and family events, I try to fit in golf, road trips, nice dinners with friends, reading (my latest is Life by Keith Richards), and going to my mom and dad’s farm to fish and cause trouble.”
You can see Brad Carson on Channel 10 when WKNO’s annual Action Auction airs live from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm on April 9, 10, 16, & 17, with over 900 items donated by local businesses. Bids on the majority of the items will be taken over the phone. Online bidding is currently available for some select items with final bids being taken online and on-air simultaneously. Information on all of the items is available at www.wkno.org. The Action Auction raises money to support WKNO’s many valuable programs and events.
WKNO is a non-profit, private foundation serving the Mid-South for over 50 years. An important community resource, WKNO uses the power of non-commercial public broadcasting to provide the Mid-South with quality educational and cultural programs that inform, entertain, and inspire.
