WKNO Salutes Its Action Auction Volunteers

April is National Volunteer Month, and WKNO is celebrating by saluting its Action Auction volunteers. Karen Campbell, who has been volunteering for the past three years, is one of WKNO’s most valued volunteers.

A native Memphian who currently resides in the Orange Mound neighborhood, Karen is the secretary of the Career Studies division office at Southwest Tennessee Community College Macon Cove Campus. “I grew up with PBS programs like Sesame Street and Electric Company,” she said. “It’s important for me to give back, and I enjoy it.”

The first time Karen volunteered, she was part of a group from her workplace who all worked the phone bank at the WKNO Action Auction. “I’ve been coming back on my own ever since,” she said. “It’s fun and I like the people.”

A graduate of Hamilton High School and State Technical Institute, Karen attends Church of Christ at Parkway Village. She has also volunteered at the Orpheum Theatre.

Karen watches many of the crafting, travel, and cooking shows that air on WKNO2’s Create lineup, including Bob Ross’ Joy of Painting, Burt Wolf Travels and Traditions, and Lidia’s Italy. She also enjoys the long-running British comedy Last of the Summer Wine, and the recent miniseries Pioneers of Television, which looked behind the scenes of Star Trek, among others.

WKNO’s annual Action Auction airs live from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm on April 9, 10, 16, & 17, with over 900 items donated by local businesses. Bids on the majority of the items will be taken over the phone. Online bidding is currently available for some select items with final bids being taken online and on-air simultaneously. Information on all of the items is available at www.wkno.org. The Action Auction raises money to support WKNO’s many valuable programs and events.

WKNO is a non-profit, private foundation serving the Mid-South for over 50 years. An important community resource, WKNO uses the power of non-commercial public broadcasting to provide the Mid-South with quality educational and cultural programs that inform, entertain, and inspire.
