WKNO Salutes Its Action Auction Volunteers
April is National Volunteer Month, and WKNO is celebrating by saluting its Action Auction volunteers. Leslie Holland, who has been volunteering for the past ten years, is one of WKNO’s most valued volunteers.
A native Memphian who currently resides in the Central Gardens neighborhood, Leslie is the librarian at Memphis College of Art. “WKNO is my favorite TV station,” she said, “and I end up buying a lot of DVDs for the library of programs I’ve seen.” She mentioned series like Independent Lens and Art in the 21st Century that showcase films about art, media, and creativity.
The first time she volunteered for WKNO, she was joining a friend of hers who had been doing it for years, and though her friend later moved out of the area she has continued to volunteer. “It’s got great energy,” she said, “and it’s fun to see the same people again every year.” Leslie missed last year’s auction but she had a good excuse, and is looking forward to sharing photos of her new son, Reid, with her auction friends!
“I like being able to see what items are coming up for bid – I’m a very competitive shopper and the Auction is great for gift shopping,” said Leslie. “One year I got my mom a gift certificate for Jazzercise lessons. She’s been taking Jazzercise classes ever since.”
In addition to working at Memphis College of Art, Leslie teaches classes at Give Yoga on South Mendenhall.
WKNO’s annual Action Auction airs live from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm on April 9, 10, 16, & 17, with over 900 items donated by local businesses. Bids on the majority of the items will be taken over the phone. Online bidding is currently available for some select items with final bids being taken online and on-air simultaneously. Information on all of the items is available at www.wkno.org. The Action Auction raises money to support WKNO’s many valuable programs and events.
WKNO is a non-profit, private foundation serving the Mid-South for over 50 years. An important community resource, WKNO uses the power of non-commercial public broadcasting to provide the Mid-South with quality educational and cultural programs that inform, entertain, and inspire.
