WKNO to Present Gubernatorial Forum

Tennessee Public Television Council (TPTC) and the League of Women Voters will offer voters a chance to hear from each of the four Republican candidates for Tennessee Governor. TN Gubernatorial Forum: Republican Edition will air live on WKNO/Channel 10 and across the state on public television stations on Tuesday, May 25 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. The public can send questions in now for the candidates at TNdecides@wkno.org. Some of the questions may be chosen to be used during the televised forum.

The forum will feature three panelists posing questions to all four Republican candidates: Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam, Joe Kirkpatrick, Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey, and U.S. Representative Zach Wamp. It will be moderated by Memphis Daily News publisher Eric Barnes. There are no plans for a Democratic Forum since businessman Mike McWherter (son of former Governor Ned McWherter) has no opposition in the Democratic Primary election.

“We have an excellent field of candidates running this year and as usual, WKNO is out front providing a public service to viewers,” said producer Tim Weeks, who has produced programs for public television, including Great Smoky Mountains: Code Blue, All*Star Bluegrass Celebration, and Rounder Records 40th Anniversary. Weeks has also produced music specials in conjunction with Austin City Limits, as well as the special Earth in the Balance with then-Senator Al Gore and the series Tennessee Capitol Newsmakers.

“An important part of being an engaged citizen,” said Michael J. LaBonia, WKNO President and CEO, “is being an informed voter. This forum will help illuminate the candidates’ positions so voters can be just that. Public broadcasting plays a vital role in informing voters to help them be more engaged citizens.”

TN Gubernatorial Forum: Republican Edition airs live Tuesday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. on WKNO/Channel 10 and repeats at midnight.
