WKNO Night at the Redbirds
WKNO and The Memphis Redbirds will team up for WKNO Night at the Redbirds on Saturday, July 24. The Redbirds will take on the Oklahoma City RedHawks beginning at 6:05 p.m. After the game, spectators can enjoy a preview on the Jumbotron of The Tenth Inning, a Ken Burns and Lynn Novick film airing this fall on WKNO/Channel 10. In addition, kids can meet Mr. Chuck, Clifford the Big Red Dog, WordGirl, and Rockey the Redbird, and the first 400 people to AutoZone Park will receive a special Tenth Inning stress ball.
“This is a great opportunity to partner with one of our community’s top leaders,” said Sally Stover, WKNO Special Events and Volunteer Coordinator. “And what a perfect way to celebrate the premiere of The Tenth Inning! We are very much looking forward to working with the Redbirds and being able to offer this fun event for families in the Mid-South.”
“I am delighted to have another opportunity to greet my young friends,” said Charles “Mr. Chuck” Scruggs, WKNO-TV’s Manager of Community Outreach and Education and host of the locally-produced children’s program Hello Mr. Chuck! “I am looking forward to watching them enjoy one of America’s great games.”
“WKNO is such an essential part of the Mid-South and we’re thrilled to have them as a partner,” said Kyle Parkinson, Director of Baseball Operations/PR for the Redbirds. “I really think our fans will enjoy seeing The Tenth Inning at the ballpark in a baseball setting.”
The Tenth Inning, set to premiere September 28-29, 2010, is a follow up to the series Baseball by acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns, which premiered on PBS in 1994. Picking up where Baseball left off, The Tenth Inning explores the American pastime from the 1990’s to the present day. It celebrates baseball’s resiliency and endurance over the years, and highlights the many players, teams, and fans that can be held responsible. Most importantly, within this series, the particular pastime of baseball is looked to as a uniting force throughout such tumultuous times as September 11.
About the Memphis Redbirds
The Memphis Redbirds Baseball Foundation is the first and only not-for-profit charitable organization in the United States to own and operate a professional baseball franchise, the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. AutoZone Park – the finest ballpark ever built in the United States below the Major League level – is the home of the Redbirds and has served as the cornerstone of development in downtown Memphis. Incorporating the Memphis Redbirds as not-for-profit entity allows the community to own the team and facility. For the first time in history, Mid-South residents, corporate leaders and baseball fans are able to give back to the community – and at the same time enjoy first class entertainment – by supporting Memphis Redbirds Baseball.
