WKNO’s Interview Series “Newsmakers” Features
Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell
WKNO-TV will premiere a new interview series Newsmakers, beginning with a conversation with Shelby County Mark Luttrell. Eric Barnes, publisher of the Memphis Daily News and host of WKNO’s weekly series Behind the Headlines, will host the half-hour show Newsmakers: Mayor Mark Luttrell on Wednesday, December 8 at 6:30 p.m. on WKNO/Channel 10. It will repeat at 11:00 p.m. on WKNO2, available over the air on Channel 10.2 and on Comcast Digital Cable Channel 910.
In this interview, Luttrell talks about growing up with a father who was a prison warden at the Penal Farm. He also discusses his career in the US Bureau of Prisons, including the ongoing connection between drug use and crime.
Barnes and Luttrell also talk about the horrific state of the Shelby County jail when Luttrell took over, and the process of improving the conditions there, as well as the principle of treating inmates decently, no matter how horrible the crime they have committed.
