WKNO Presents Second Season of Sun Studio Sessions,
Memphis-based Music Show Airing on Public Television Stations Nationally
A new season of Sun Studio Sessions kicks off January 1 with a performance by The Walkmen, critically acclaimed New-York-based indy-rock band. This marks the second season for the Memphis-based music performance series presented by public television station WKNO. Sun Studio Sessions airs Saturday nights at 11:00 p.m. on WKNO/Channel 10, following the popular PBS series Austin City Limits.
Each half-hour episode of Sun Studio Sessions focuses on one musical performer or group and includes conversations about songwriting, musicianship, and inspiration as well as the spotlighted performances. Recorded at historic Sun Studios, the series found a home on public television stations across the country. In 2010, more than 200 public television stations aired the series, including in major markets like New York City, Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington DC and San Francisco. More are expected to sign up for the new season, which will be broadcast in High Definition.
WKNO first introduced Sun Studio Sessions in the form of short clips airing between other musical programming, and it premiered as a half-hour show in January of 2010.
The thirteen-episode season also includes performances by Backyard Tire Fire, Grace Potter& The Nocturnals, Garrison Starr, Jacob Dylan & 3 Legs, and more. Sun Studio Sessions is available to public television stations across the country through NETA (National Educational Telecommunications Association).
Following the Jakob Dylan taping, WKNO Program Manager Debi Robertson posted the follow quote on her Facebook page: “Got to watch Jakob Dylan tape a session at Sun Studios last Friday night. Magic really happens in that historic studio. You can almost feel the spirit of everyone who has ever recorded there.”
Sun Studio is an international tourist destination and a designated National Historic Landmark for its unparalleled contributions to music culture for providing the first professional recording opportunities for blues legends like Howlin’ Wolf, B.B. King and Rufus Thomas, as well as discovering music legends Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Roy Orbison, among many others. The historic studio serves as a charming backdrop for these live performances from today’s rising young touring artists
WKNO is a non-profit, private foundation serving the Mid-South for more than 50 years.
