WKNO TO AIR MEMPHIS VOCAL ARTS ENSEMBLE CONCERT FEATURING MUSIC OF THE GREATEST GENERATION

WKNO is pleased to premiere Music of the Greatest Generation: A Concert by the Memphis Vocal Arts Ensemble with the Memphis Jazz Orchestra. The concert, to be taped live on September 28 during the event at the Germantown Performing Arts Centre, will make its television premiere on Thursday, October 4 at 9:00 p.m. on Channel 10 and WKNO-HD. The television production is made possible by Memphis Eye & Cataract Associates.

This special concert opens The Memphis Vocal Arts Ensemble’s 2007- 2008 season and salutes the men and women who fought to preserve our freedom during World War II. The concert, which will feature special guests the Memphis Jazz Orchestra, will be held on Friday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. at GPAC. Tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for Seniors, and $15 for students and children. For tickets and information, contact the Memphis Vocal Arts Ensemble office at (901) 458-9766 or visit their Web site at mvae.org.

Music of the Greatest Generation is a nostalgic hit parade from the WWII years. Tickets will be set aside in order to extend a special invitation to World War II veterans to attend the concert as honored guests, without charge.

Selections will include “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”, “Tuxedo Junction”, “White Cliffs of Dover”, “I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo”, “I’ll Never Smile Again”, “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and “I’ll Be Seeing You”.

Memphis Vocal Arts Ensemble General Director Tom Machen said, “This concert has special meaning to me because my dad was one of those young people who risked everything so that we could live in freedom. I consider this concert my tribute to my beloved father and our tribute to all the brave guys and gals who put it on the line for us all those years ago.”

On September 23, WKNO will premiere the highly anticipated acclaimed 15-hour documentary The War – A Film By Ken Burns. Several other documentaries on various aspects of WWII also aired throughout the month. In addition, WKNO will premiere a new local piece on how WWII changed our community in The Call of Duty: WWII in the Mid-South. This documentary will air Thursday, October 4 at 8:00 p.m., just before the premiere of Music of the Greatest Generation.
