WKNO Salutes Its Action Auction Volunteers
April is National Volunteer Month, and WKNO is celebrating by saluting its Action Auction volunteers. Reggie Indorf of Memphis is one of WKNO’s most valued volunteers.
Along with her friends Barbara Best and Lorraine Heist, Reggie is one of WKNO’s most intrepid pledge volunteers, willing to brave bad weather and work shifts that are sometimes difficult to staff. “For the first time today, I noticed the plaque outside the new building that says the land was donated by Harrah’s,” she said on a recent visit to the station as she dropped off some items for the Action Auction, “It’s been ages since I was here during daylight!”
Originally from Baltimore, MD, Reggie and her late husband Buddy moved to Memphis in 1966, when Gates Rubber Company, Buddy’s employer, transferred him from Atlanta to Memphis. Buddy Indorf was a longtime volunteer who helped at WKNO’s first auctions, with a special interest in coin collecting. For many years, the Indorfs would spend the winter months in Florida, returning just in time for the Action Auction. They also enjoyed world travel, and visited Australia, North Africa, Alaska, Malaysia and other destinations.
Reggie’s daughter Melanie, a school teacher in North Carolina, frequently visits during the summer and has joined her volunteering at WKNO events. Reggie has six grandchildren and is soon to be a great-grandmother.
WKNO’s annual Action Auction airs live on April 24 & 25 and May 1 & 2, with approximately 1200 items donated by local businesses. While the majority of the bids will be taken over the phone during the live broadcast, select items are currently available for online bidding. Final bids on these items will be taken online and on-air simultaneously. All items may be viewed at www.wkno.org. The Action Auction raises money to support WKNO’s many valuable programs and events.
Reggie is a big fan of WKNO-FM, especially Car Talk and A Prairie Home Companion. “I love him,” she said of host Garrison Keillor, “I don’t understand how he can get through that whole show without laughing.”
Reggie travels and participates in a wide variety of social activities, including volunteering for organizations she supports. Reggie also volunteers at the Orpheum Theater and Playhouse on the Square, and makes baby caps for newborns at the St. Francis Hospital. “It’s something I can do to give back. I have time to help. Some other people don’t have a lot of time.”
WKNO is a non-profit, private foundation serving the Mid-South for over 50 years. An important community resource, WKNO uses the power of non-commercial public broadcasting to provide the Mid-South with quality educational and cultural programs that inform, entertain, and inspire.
