Ken Burns was inspired to produce The War, mostly because of two alarming facts: WWII veterans are dying at a rate of more than 1000 per day and a study noted that a large percentage of high schools students are graduating believing the United States fought with the Germans, against the Russians in WWII. You can help touch both issues in your classrooms and groups.

TEACHER’S KIT
PBS is sending out a “Power of Storytelling” Teacher’s Kit to go to all high schools in September, 2007. For more information, visit the Veterans History Project website or the PBS Teachers' website.

LIVE VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP
WKNO will also be airing a special program created especially for the classroom. Echoes of War: Stories from the Big Red One will air live on Thursday, September 27 at noon on Channel 10. This program will originate from the First Division Museum at Cantigny in Wheaton, IL, providing viewers the ability to interact with war veterans and the program’s hosts via the Internet or by phone. This broadcast is provided at no cost to you. To register, visit the Echoes of War website.

MAKE IT LOCAL
WKNO is producing a companion documentary to The War. This program, entitled The Call of Duty: WWII in the Mid-South, presents stories from local WWII veterans and those living in the Mid-South during the war years.

There are many wonderful WWII veterans willing to share their stories to your students. In order to get connected with veterans, contact local veterans organizations.
