One on One with Becky Magura

Join Becky Magura when she sits down with Dr. Penny Schwinn, Tennessee's education commissioner, to discuss her goals under Governor Lee's administration.

Schwinn, who has achieved success in being both an educator and administrator, was tapped to join Governor Lee’s administration in one of his most significant cabinet positions.

Schwinn comes from a family of educators, including a mother who taught for four decades. Schwinn began her career with Teach for America and then returned to her hometown to start Capitol Collegiate Academy, a K-8 charter school serving low-income students.

“It was a honor to sit down with Commissioner Schwinn to hear her outline her goals under the new administration by continuing to build upon the momentum the state of Tennessee has achieved in education over the last decade,” said Becky Magura, WCTE’s president & CEO.

Schwinn replaced Candice McQueen who left the position back in January 2019 to become CEO of the National Institute of Excellence in Teaching. Governor Lee has expressed that Schwinn is the right leader who understands that every child in Tennessee deserves a high-quality education.
