Australian period drama. It is Anzac Day 1958, and as Inverness commemorates, a local youth disturbs the ceremony, mocking their warmongering. Sarah recognizes the youth's companion as the niece of a friend of hers and admonishes her behavior. Sarah has a brush with Henry, who is now head of surgery at the hospital when he misses the symptoms of a diabetic coma in a patient. Regina, three years into her incarceration in a psychiatric institution, claims to have had a breakthrough.

Sarah finds Leah and persuades her to return home to see her uncle, but this episode has reawakened her sense of her adopted religion, and she insists to George that their son is to be raised as a Jew. Douglas continues with strenuous work at the mission despite being told to rest by his doctor, and Jack learns that Frank has had similar or worse war experiences to his own.

Elizabeth is disgruntled with Douglas for accepting an invitation on her behalf to attend Shabbat at Sarah's cottage, insisting that David should be raised Church of England. Sir Richard has prepared a hotel suite in Sydney for Regina to acclimatize to her newfound freedom. Ed tells Anna that he will publish her new novel.

As Sarah and George depart with Leah and David to Canberra, a distraught Regina attempts to stop George, warning of her inability to help him if he doesn't remain in Inverness.
Postoperative Douglas remains in hospital, and Jack and Henry have a heated discussion about informing him of his prognosis. Elizabeth insists on him being kept in ignorance.

George tells Sarah that she must be clever about how to approach the woman she suspects of being a former guard at Ravensbruck concentration camp.
Roy drives an unwilling Larry Grey to the burned-out remains of Frank Gibb's cabin. Anna calls Sir Richard for advice on how to get out of her publishing contract, and Douglas realises that his condition is terminal.

On the eve of the open day at the hospital in support of the women's clinic, George is still depressed about James's rejection of life at Ash Park, and Sarah is aware that he is becoming more distant with David. Elizabeth is ignoring an important correspondence from Douglas's solicitor as she discusses with Frank Gibbs the possibility of a new job for him.

Douglas's son Matthew explains to Elizabeth why his father refused to acknowledge him as he makes the acquaintance of Anna and Olivia.
George is convinced that Regina's plan on how to distract Sir Richard while he finds another source to cover his debts will succeed, but the family will be reliant on Jack's cooperation.

Regina warns Jack that Sir Richard is intending to use his friendship with Frank Gibbs to incite the bigots in the election. Sir Richard's attempts to bully Jack are thwarted when Jack tells him he is standing because of Sir Richard's malevolent visit to Elizabeth, and that he may not win the election but he is getting people to ask the right questions.
